“Handel, vrede en vriendschap met alle landen, maar verbintenissen met niemand”;
Thomas Jefferson, stated as early as 1799 that “Commerce with all nations, alliance with none, should be our motto”, and in 1801 “I deem [one of] the essential principles of our government [to be] peace, commerce, and honest friendship with all nations, entangling alliances with none.”
